Phonics and Early Reading

Foston Primary School is  passionate about teaching all our children to read competently and fluently for their age and instilling them with a love of reading.

In phonics we use the government recommended letters and sounds program to enable your child to decode fluently. We use a variety of reading schemes throughout KS1 that are carefully matched to a child’s phonics ability. These include Bug Club and Oxford Reading Tree. All our children enjoy weekly group guided reading sessions.

Learning to read is a journey that progresses throughout their primary school years and we continue to provide opportunities to develop a love of reading through a range of  reading materials that link with the curriculum and your child’s interests. We offer many opportunities to celebrate our children’s reading with choral speaking, church services and world book day to name a few.

Our focus on understanding and enjoying texts ensures children leave our school as confident readers who choose to engage in books.
